Plastic Free Prestwich
We work with local, independent businesses and a host of other community groups & organisations to support efforts to remove and reduce single-use plastics.
More about the project
Plastic Free Prestwich is a joint project by Prestwich Environmental Forum and the charity Surfers Against Sewage.
This is a supportive, positive project aimed to help businesses make changes whilst also recognising some changes are more difficult that others. We champion, celebrate and promote the good work going on in our community.
Our aims are to reduce single-use plastics used in Prestwich, support businesses & groups taking positive action for the environment and put pressure on the larger businesses and industry to change the ways they work.
More about Surfers Against Sewage
Surfers Against Sewage is a UK charity that has grown from a grassroots movement protecting beaches, oceans and wildlife, to one of the most active environmental charities in the UK.
The charity runs the Plastic-Free Communities project, supporting towns to tackle single-use plastics by providing resources, raising awareness, assessing the actions taken and linking up a network of communities across the UK.

What is involved?
We support you to identify easy alternatives to single-use plastics. Some are more difficult to tackle than others and there is no expectation that you can get rid of it all. If you've already been reducing or use minimal single-use plastics we can include that too.
Our aim is to support and promote positive action and build a united community.
Independent, local businesses are invited to work towards accreditation.
We welcome community groups, schools, nurseries, faith organisations, community centres & spaces, libraries, sports team, Girl Guide/Scout groups (the list goes on!) to join as an ally of the project.
Supporting our local independent businesses
These are the fantastic independent Prestwich businesses who are all plastic-free accredited and doing great work to protect our environment!
What is a plastic-free businesses?
When we shop local, we support our neighbours & communities. There are often environmental benefits too with reduced transportation & product miles. Smaller businesses also produce less waste and have greater control over their packaging and products.
Plastic-free businesses are small & independent local enterprises who have identified at least three items of single-use plastics in their daily activities and either reduced or removed them. Many of these businesses have done well above this minimum requirement. The evidence is assessed by the charity who approves their accreditation.
We aren't affiliated with these businesses and we can't account for everything they do. We have met, worked with and supported many of them and it's clear just how much passion, effort and care goes into some of the conscientious local businesses we have in Prestwich.

Working with our community allies
Here are our community allies, backing this project and taking their own steps towards reducing plastics – we’re thrilled to have their support!
What is a plastic-free community ally?
Individuals, families, community groups, schools, faith organisations, community centres & spaces are all taking steps to protect the environment. Together we’re showing big business and industry that we demand action on single-use plastics.
Plastic-free community allies are any local organisations who support this project and are mindful of single-use plastics in their day-to-day activities.
Together, we're building a community against single-use plastics.
Whilst we work with many fantastic local groups, we can't account for every thing they do.
